Missionary Moments Planning Guide

JANUARY 2010

January 10, 2010: The Self-righteous and Hypocritical

Morning: As a North American missionary and the Director of the Pikes Peak Baptist Association, BILL LIGHTY’s primary responsibilities are to assist, network, and resource the churches of the association in fulfilling their unique, God-given mission. This region presents a challenge as Christians are often viewed as self-righteous and hypocritical. The Lightys covet your prayers and appreciate your support through the Cooperative Program (CP), which allows them to strategically use God’s resources to share the Gospel with everyone in the Pikes Peak region. Thank you for interceding on behalf of Bill and CAROL and the churches in the Pikes Peak Association. Deuteronomy 14:22 Each year you are to set aside a tenth of all the produce grown in your fields.

January 10, 2010: Small Group, Soul-Winning Ministry

Evening: CLINT STEWART works closely with Pavel, a believer in St. Petersburg, Russia. Pavel has been mentoring believers who are part of a Bible study. He helped his small group see that its purpose for meeting together was to encourage each other and be a soul-winning ministry. During one meeting, Pavel had the opportunity to practice this when an unbeliever joined the group. Instead of presenting a typical study of the Scriptures, Pavel shared Christ with the unbelieving girl. Two weeks later when Pavel was not leading the Bible study, the girl returned and expressed her desire to accept Christ. The group prayed with her and received her into their fellowship. Your commitment to fulfilling God’s Great Commission through CP is impacting people you may never meet on this side of heaven. Add Clint, Pavel’s small group, and this new sister in Christ to your prayer list this week. STATEMENT: Giving has always been an expectation of God for His people. Christian giving, however, is for a larger purpose than when the Israelites gave a tithe; we give to reach the lost for Christ.

January 17, 2010: Freezing Waters of the Desna River

Morning: BILLY and PATTY ARNOLD spend up to six months a year coordinating work in Bryansk, Russia, from their home in Seattle, Washington, where Billy is the pastor of Lifeway Church. What started as a Bible study has developed into a church averaging 70 to 80 people a week led by people in their twenties. IMB missionaries BUCK and LESLIE BURCH, who formerly lived in Bryansk, were there the day five young people were baptized in the freezing waters of the Desna River — the same river where ice fishermen were trying their luck that day. You were part of this celebration, thanks to your faithful support through the Cooperative Program (CP). The water was cold, but the hearts of the Arnolds were warmed to see, after years of prayer, young people commit their lives to become fishers of men. Please pray for Bill, Patty, and these young people this week. 2 Corinthians 8:7 Now as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love for us excel also in this grace.

January 17, 2010: The Numbers are Growing, the Opportunity is Great

Evening: Their numbers are growing, and so is the need for churches to reach and disciple them. As North American Mission Board Hispanic church planting missionaries, ABRAHAM and ESTER AREVALO desire for the large Hispanic community within the Heart of Kansas Southern Baptist Association in Wichita to have congregations where they can hear God’s Word and grow in their faith. Thanks in part to our prayers, and our commitment to reaching people through CP, Abraham helps develop strategies to plant new Hispanic churches and coordinates the evangelistic efforts to reach the Hispanic population in the area. The opportunity is great, and many are coming to know Christ. Pray for God’s direction and blessing and that their continued efforts will bear much fruit. STATEMENT: The Corinthians apparently wanted to excel in Christian living, but they had fallen short in the grace of giving. Paul challenged them to grow by including generous giving. Giving helps us grow in Christlikeness.

January 24, 2010: North American Mission Service Corps

Morning: North American Mission Service Corps coordinators THOMAS and JUNE NOLEN spend a great deal of time traveling to churches and promoting missions in Mississippi. They encourage believers to participate in missions and provide information on the needs in their communities and around the world. They also help participants plan mission trips and ministries to the needy. “One of the most rewarding parts of our job is to link people with a specific ministry need in the state,” says June. Together, working through the Cooperative Program (CP), we can join the Nolens in working toward and praying for spiritual renewal and awakening for Mississippi and our nation. Ask God to give all of us a sense of urgency in sharing Jesus with all nations. Philippians 4:6-8 Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses every thought, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise—dwell on these things.

January 24, 2010: Viva Italia Vision Trip Video

Evening: PAUL VOSTEEN is a media worker in Germany. He and colleague MARC HOOKS in Russia teamed up with Mike Bruce, an assistant professor of communications at Oklahoma Baptist University, to document the spiritual status of people in Italy. The group gathered images for videos and slideshows to encourage Southern Baptists to volunteer their time in Italy’s 20 regions and the Vatican City. The Viva Italia vision trip video provides a visual tour of the country and chronicles the efforts of workers reaching out to Neapolitans in Naples as well as university students in Rome. God has given Paul a vision for Italy. Let’s ask God to give us all a vision of who can be reached in Italy and around the world as we work together through CP. Paul and Marc would appreciate our prayers this week. STATEMENT: When we make requests of God in prayer, we are more conscious of God’s giving and our dependence upon Him. Our faithful giving shows gratitude to God and verifies the sincerity of our prayer requests.

January 31, 2010: Discipling Young Christians

Morning: MIKE and VICKI MCQUITTY are North American missionaries working to reach the 75,000 college students located in central New York. Utilizing various methods to share the Gospel and disciple young Christians, Mike trains them to carry the Gospel and plant churches throughout the region. They also develop student leaders to take the Gospel overseas and work with our International Mission Board missionaries. It’s exciting to tap into the zeal and giftedness of these students, and our church is a partner in this effort through our consistent support of Cooperative Program (CP). Pray for the McQuittys and these students this week. 2 Timothy 1:12 …And that is why I suffer these things. But I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to guard what has been entrusted to me[3] until that day.

January 31, 2010: Church Planting at Kiev Theological Seminary

Evening: Our commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program enabled JOEL and MARY ELLEN RAGAINS to start the churchplanting program at Kiev Theological Seminary (KTS) to produce effective church planters. “The unique thing is that students must plant a church while they are still in seminary, so it does not take four years for them to start a church,” Mary Ellen said. Closer to home, Rick Morton and Tony Merida at Temple Baptist Church in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, help qualify students for this effort. In addition, Rick and Tony teach twoweek courses at KTS and send teams from Temple Baptist to help the church plants in Kiev. Temple Baptist also established a nonprofit program to host orphans from Ukraine. Temple Baptist families have adopted four Ukrainian children and anticipate the adoptions of four more. Thank God for this wonderful ministry and add them to your prayer list this week. STATEMENT: Commitment which leads to growth in Christlikeness instills an eternal hope. Keeping a commitment to grow in giving is a testimony that “I am not ashamed” of the one in “whom I have believed.”
